Butterflies!!!

The caterpillars have arrived!!!  Some of our "Nature Smart" students helped to get them set up in their new homes.  Each student received a caterpillar that they named in a cup full of food.  We are looking forward to them eating lots and growing bigger...

We have done some observations of our caterpillars like scientists and learned some valuable things like "frass" is the word for their waste.  We are enjoying our new pets!

A few of our caterpillars have turned into chrysallis form.  Just like we learned, they hung upside down in a j shape and shook as they changed form.  We even got to see a few of them do it.  Pretty amazing!

We have moved some of them into our class butterfly habitats and we are patiently waiting for the first butterfly to appear.  We have been told 7 days, but we are hoping for sooner...

We have our first Painted Lady BUTTERFLY!!!!  We are so very excited and look forward to even more in the next few days!!!

Explode a Moment wih Barry Lane

Students have been challenged to find a specific moment in their life to explode with details for our cereal box project narrative.  We watched how Barry Lane describes how to explode a moment and we tried exploding our own moments within our writing.

The Dot

We read The Dot with Mrs. Krueger's class and were challenged to design our own dot showing how we will make our mark on the world this school year.  We need to decorate our dot and write a goal on the front along with our name.  The goal can be academic, behavioral, social, or personal.  We just want to see what mark you plan to make this year.  Looking forward to reading your dot!

Million Words Challenge

Yes, YOU are getting a homework assignment!  Because it will take us a great deal of time to get to know each and every one of your uniquely talented students, we would like to invite you to tell us what you think we should know about your scholar.
The reason behind the “assignment” is that it often takes teachers an entire school year to truly get to know your child.  Some students we never really know before it’s time for him or her to move on to the next grade level.  This activity gives you, the parent – the ultimate expert on your student, a chance to introduce your unique scholar to us.
We ask that you please complete this assignment by Friday, September 19th. However, we know you are very busy, so we will gladly accept it at any time.  You can either send it to school with your scholar or e-mail it to us at: carrie_kunert@beaverton.k12.or.us

Thank you in advance for sharing your thoughts with us.  We look forward to an exciting and busy year with your children!

Summer Planning

Welcome to a New Year at Scholls Heights!!!

What do teachers do during summer vacation?  Well, they do rest and relax, but they also spend time getting ready for the upcoming school year.  Today we met as a brand new teaching team and welcomed Mrs. Krueger into our Scholls Heights family.  Our 5th grade teaching team this year will be: Mrs. Krueger, Mr. Pontius, and me (Mrs. Kunert).  We are very excited to have her join our team and look forward to a wonderful year!!
